February is a funny month. For us in the North it's still Winter and if you live South it's still boiling hot Summer. It's the 2nd month of year and the shortest; but this year we add one more day which makes this year a Leap Year. Why do we have this every four years?
In a nutshell, it takes the Earth 365 and a quarter days to circle the sun, which is called a year. So every 4 years we need the extra day to stop the calendar from getting out of line with the sun. It actually takes 364 1/4 days for the sun to rotate the earth. So, every four years we throw in an extra day to make up those four quarter days. It actually takes the Earth 365.25 days to orbit the Sun, so an extra day is added every four years to compensate.
You would think this is a month for not a lot to happen but you would be surprised. There are lots of events especially if you have children as well. Here are some of the dates to look out for:
National Storytelling Week1st Feb to 8th Feb 2020
A week for the promotion of the oral tradition of storytelling, the very first way of communicating life experiences and the creative imagination.
Groundhog Day2nd Feb 2020
US holiday to celebrate the emergence of a Groundhog, which signifies when spring will arrive, apparently.
Safer Internet Day4th Feb 2020
A day to help raise awareness of online safety issues in your home, school, workplace or community, not just on Safer Internet Day but all year round.
World Nutella Day5th Feb 2020
A day dedicated to enjoyment of this most popular of chocolate and hazlenut spreads.
St. Valentine's Day14th Feb 2020
The annual celebration of love is the day when we take the opportunity to tell the people we love just how much they mean to us.
Pancake Day25th Feb 2020
Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent begins, when people would traditionally use up all their fat and eggs by making pancakes.
There are loads more special days, for example Harry Potter Book night on 6th Feb, Charles Darwin day 12th Feb, Fair-trade Fortnight from 24th Feb and of course a chance for the ladies to propose on 29th Feb (although that does seem a little old fashioned now)
My special day is 26th February as it was the day my eldest daughter came into the world. She will be 19 and will be celebrating with University friends.
What happens when you have a baby born 29th February? Do you celebrate the birthday every year on either side of this date or do you go every 4 years and celebrate a 1st birthday the first leap year after it is born? I would love to hear from people who have this experience?
I'm feeling a little generous here, but if you have a baby born 29th February this year, I am offering a FREE mini newborn session!! All I need is proof of birth on this day.
In the meantime, I am doing my second mini newborn session this month and bookings are now open. One lucky family will also win a lovely Mummy's Notebook Journal for them to write and talk about their baby's first year.
If you have any other interesting facts about February, comment below as I would love to hear these. I'm off to find my frying pan and start practising my flip with the pancakes. And if you are celebrating St. Valentines Day, what are you going to do?
Whatever happens this month, stay warm (if in Northern Hemisphere) or stay cool (Southern Hemisphere) and enjoy as it is still the shortest month of the year and March is not far off.
10 Moment in the Last Decade
Can you believe we are now coming to the end of another decade and entering the third decade of this Century? As ever so much has happened and now is a time to reflect on ten things that have happened or changed during the last ten years.
What to Expect in 2020
You lay objet in a certain way and take photo from above giving a bird's eye view. The objects are are placed on a flat surface and so give the illusion of laying down flat.
It looks so easy but it needs to be super stylish
If this something you want to do yourself - great! Smartphones are amazing these days and with the right kind of lighting and positioning you can get some pretty cool results.
Here are my 5 tips of how to do flatlay photography using your phone.
What is special and how does it work for your brand/business?
Flatlay has become the most popular trend on Social Media this year. It gives an appealing visual look and shows off your brand. It's a convenient way to promote your business in a simple stylised way. It not just for social media as it can be used on website headers, landing pages, prints, banners or business cards.
To get inspiration on creativity, take a look obviously on Instagram but also Pinterest is brilliant ideas. These are my two favourite places to view that help me discuss and talk with my clients.
DSLR cameras vs Smartphones
Most people these days have smartphones. They're getting better and better every year. I love my iPhone 10X but I still feel with my DSLR (Nikon D750 & Sony A7mk3)I have so much more control. You can focus so much more comfortably than with the phone. Lighting is a great on phones as do adjust accordingly but with the controls on the DSLR you can override and adjust with more ease. Disadvantage with DSLR, the weight and bulk of shooting from above whereas with the phone it is simple, light and quick to use.
Whichever way you choose; bear in mind how you want to show off your brand your style. If choosing just for social media, then the phone is perfect. However, if you want to use for marketing purposes, such as banners, business cards and leaflets then DSLR is your go to and in the next few months, I will rolling out some flatlay images you can purchase for your own offline and online use which will save you time and frustration.
Meanwhile, if you feel you want to offer your products, a clean, trendy look and struggle with your ideas, why not book a session with me?
It's been a while since I last wrote on here. Lots going on and children both at home from as early as mid June. This, last week, I have finally got my house back and one child safely delivered to University and the other child back into school routine having had a mammoth 10 weeks off. She's moaning because, she now has a cold! That's travelling on the London Underground for you!!
Anyway, quietly, in the background I have been working hard on my Photography business, growing my Brand Photography niche. I have been mentored by a wonderful photographer Gillian Devine and also worked with a business coach to help grow my own business.
I have been working with other amazing photographers both for marketing support and also for editing ideas. As you can see I haven't been slacking off! I'm still working hard on Family & Newborn sessions and looking forward to the Christmas Mini Sessions next month. I worked on the idea of a Frozen theme as I'm aware of the new Disney movie coming out. This idea came about from as early as July. Now bookings are open so go over to my Facebook page to find out more and availability and details.

I had a wonderful opportunity taking pictures of Dhanisha Kapadia for her business Mummys Masala Kitchen. She has a warm and welcoming approach to her beautiful home. Her kitchen is all laid out for teaching her clients how to cook that perfect curry dish.
We had a fantastic day of prepping and later, a willing model came to help with making the dishes. My photos show just what is involved in making those delicious curries. For more information on cookery classes contact Dhanisha at Mummy's Masala Kitchen email@example.com
